About Us

Our story

Our hotel is founded on the principle of fair trade travel and international and local partnership, and we are substantially owned by Zanzibaris, which means that the income we generate really does make a difference to local people.

We take our social responsibilities very seriously and we have drawn faithfully on Zanzibar’s rich and ancient traditions and culture, while employing over 70 local artisans to build, furnish and maintain our uniquely authentic property.

Our business model is underpinned by ownership that lies very substantially in local village hands. Our village first employment policy means that every single one of our highly trained staff of over 40 people hails from and lives in the Matemwe area.

We also have a deep seated respect for our stunning environment – hence our use of the most natural building materials and the many palm trees growing just next to our buildings! We also uphold the highest standards in sustainable tropical luxury, and will never charge you for having unfettered access to the fastest Wi-Fi available in East Africa!

Most of our delicious fruits & vegetables are grown by a cooperative of local farmers that we helped to put together as an informal social enterprise on agricultural land a few kilometres away.

Zanzibar Sunrise at Bandas makes a monthly contribution to the Matemwe Village informal health care fund administered by the Sheha (local village chief) and other community leaders. The fund is drawn down on when villagers who lack the means require medical intervention for serious illnesses.

We are a genuinely local and international impact investment business and we invest heavily in our community.
